Golden Globe-winning actress Gillian Anderson has signed on to join the cast of Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron sci-fi franchise from Disney.

Anderson joins a cast that includes the likes of Jared Leto, Cameron Monaghan, Evan Peters, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith. Tron: Ares is the third movie in the Tron franchise, which first began way back in 1982 and continued with the 2010 legacy sequel, Tron: Legacy.

Tron 3, aka Tron Ares, is finally filming after months of delays. Director Joachim Rønning shared new behind-the-scenes images via his Instagram account to make the announcement. The new images don't give anything away about the movie itself, but instead show the director's chair, complete with the stylized movie's name written as TR3N — and a look at the clapperboard being used in the production.

Anderson is very well known for her X-Files role, which she reprised for feature films and a series revival. More recently, she starred on the hit Netflix shows The Crown and Sex Education, as well as the mystery thriller The Pale Blue Eye. Anderson also recently wrapped filming on the upcoming drama Scoop, based on the famous BBC interview with Prince Andrew concerning his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Her next film, the Wonder spinoff White Bird, will be released in October 2024.
