MEL GIBSON and JULIA ROBERTS took top honours last night (07JAN00) - when millions of American were given the chance to vote for their favourite actors in the world.

Fans picked the winners online for the 27th Annual PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS, voting for Gibson and Roberts as favourite movie stars, while 'N SYNC walked away with Favourite Musical Group.

The ceremony marks the first big Award ceremony in Hollywood's gong season - the annual three months of award-giving which ends with the prestigious Oscars.
