Jolie's doubts for Maleficent voice.

Angelina Jolie has admitted she was scared of the role of Maleficent.

The Salt star felt some trepidation about taking on the role of Sleeping Beauty's evil fairy because she worried she could not live up to Eleanor Audley, who voiced the character in the original 1959 Disney film.

"I was quite afraid to do it because I thought the first one was done so perfectly. When I was young I thought she was so cool, so elegant and powerful and had such a great voice," she said. "And as an actress I do film, I don't do theatre so I don't have that voice."

But the mother-of-six cast her doubts aside, and ended up surprising herself.

"I think there's a side of all of us that would like to be completely free and use our voice to the fullest and have as big a laugh as possible, and there are very little opportunities to do this and explore that side of yourself," she continued.

"Maleficent was that character for me. I didn't know my voice could be that strong or that I could have that much fun, and she has a freedom that, certainly in daily life, I don't have."

Angelina, who is engaged to Brad Pitt, also revealed their older children - 12-year-old Maddox and Pax, 10 - thought Mr & Mrs Smith, the 2005 film which brought the couple together, "was the funniest thing they'd ever seen".

"Apparently watching your parents fight as spies is some strange child fantasy," she added.
