Johansson always wanted to direct.

Scarlett Johansson has revealed she was inspired to step behind the cameras after Robert Redford directed her in The Horse Whisperer when she was a child.

The actress played a traumatised teen in the drama when she was just 14, and admitted she was fascinated watching Redford direct.

The 29-year-old is now preparing to take the reins on her first feature, Truman Capote's Summer Crossing.

"I remember making The Horse Whisperer and realising I wanted Bob Redford's job, so I always thought I'd eventually transition more into development and directing," said Scarlett.

"I'm proud of the work I've done and that I've maintained my artistic integrity, whatever that means, while still dabbling in different genres and working with different people," she went on.

"It's nice to grow. I never get hung up in one corner."

Scarlett, 29, also revealed she is always looking for new challenges: "Maybe I'm more fearless now in the choices I make. I'm not as afraid of failing, I guess," she explained.

The actress can soon be seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, reprising the role of the Black Widow.

"It's an interesting challenge to keep coming back to this character, and I have the good fortune of playing someone evolving with each instalment," she said of the skilled assassin.

But the star insisted getting ready to wear Black Widow's unforgiving catsuit is "boring", explaining: " I get up at 5am, go to the gym, train like a dude and then eat a bunch of lettuce. It's not glamorous at all."
