Christian, a young poet, is plunged into the heady world of the Moulin Rouge and of Toulouse- Lautrec and his entourage, whilst drafted to write a nightclub spectacular. In this seedy world, he begins a passionate and dangerous affair with the club's highest paid star and courtesan, Satine.
