Connery: Ewan Must be Next 007

Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor is being tipped to become the next James Bond - by Sir Sean Connery.

The 74-year-old, who starred as 007 in seven films and is often hailed as the best 007, backs his fellow Scot for the role.

He told the Daily Star: "He's very good. He should do it if he wants to do it."

Bond producers are on the look-out for a new man after plans for a fifth Pierce Brosnan outing fell through.

McGregor, 33, became a worldwide star when he took the role of Obi Wan Kenobi in the new Star Wars series.

Bookmakers have made him favourite to play the super-spy.

He is closely followed by another Scotsman, Enigma and Ripley's Game star Dougray Scott.

The leading English contender for the part, Jude Law, has slipped in the betting stakes after his remake of Alfie made little impression at the box office.

Other actors linked with the Bond include Australians Eric Bana and Hugh Jackman.
