Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone to star in The Memory Police adaptation from Reed Morano, Charlie Kaufman & Martin Scorsese.
It will adapt the acclaimed 1994 science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa. Reed Morano, who helmed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale as well as indie I Think We’re Alone Now, is on board to direct the feature whose story has tones of Franz Kafka and George Orwell, and fittingly comes armed with a script by Charlie Kaufman,
The novel takes place on an unnamed island where the people who live there are subject to collective amnesia. They endure a process of forgetting things, including objects, people, and daily rituals, with the amnesia enforced by an organization called the Memory Police. In the meta story, a novelist tries to hide her editor from the Memory Police since he can still remember the truth. The Japanese book was published in an English translation in 2019 and was a finalist for the National Book Award and International Booker Price.
Gladstone is coming off an acclaimed performance as Mollie Kyle in Killers of the Flower Moon; this week, she became the first-ever Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Prior to that role, she appeared in Certain Women, First Cow, and Fancy Dance, and made a memorable guest appearance on Hulu's Reservation Dogs. She can next be seen in the Hulu true crime drama Under the Bridge, alongside Riley Keough and Archie Panjabi.
