Biography

Born in La Coruña in 1957. Won the Critics’ Prize for the book of short stories entitled A Million Cows (1990), which, like all of his work, is originally written in Galician.

Subsequently, he published the novel Los comedores de patatas (1992). His poetic work (including books such as Balada nas praias do oeste, Mohicania y Ningún cisne, En salvaje compañia (Alfaguara, 1994), only confirms his extraordinary creative ability, and has earned him a distinguished place among the outstanding writers of the new generation. As essayist, he has published Galicia, bonsai atlántico and Toxos e flores: Humor, destrucción e saudade no reino de Galicia.

He writes regularly in the national daily, El País and is director of the literary magazine Luzes de Galicia.

Qué me quieres, amor?, won The Torrente Ballester Award in 1995 as well as the National Literary Prize in 1997.

Manuel Rivas has also published a novel Os lapis do carpinteiro.
