Biography

MIKE NEWELL's feature film directing credits include "Dance With a Stranger" (which was awarded the Prix de la Jeunesse at the Cannes International Film Festival), "The Good Father" (winner of the Prix Italia), and "Four Weddings and A Funeral," starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. The latter, which ultimately grossed over $300 million worldwide, received Best Picture and Best Achievement in Direction awards from BAFTA; and was an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture. It also received France's Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film and the London Critics Circle awards for Best British Film of the Year and British Director of the Year.

His other motion picture directing credits include the cult favorite "The Awakening," "Enchanted April" (for which Miranda Richardson received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress Musical/Comedy), "Into the West," "Donnie Brasco," and "Pushing Tin."

Newell has previously executive-produced several features, including Mike Barker's "Best Laid Plans," Risa Bramon Garcia's "200 Cigarettes," and Stephen Frears' "High Fidelity."

Raised in England and educated at Cambridge University, Newell began his career as a production trainee at Granada Television. His television directing highlights include "Ready When You Are Mr. Magill," which earned him a BAFTA award nomination; "The Man In The Iron Mask" (1977); the Emmy Award-nominated "Blood Feud"; the miniseries "Common Ground" (which received the Humanitas Prize); "Tales Out of School: Birth of a Nation" (which won Berlin's Prix Futura award); and "Destiny."
