Biography

Steve Lawrence has spent more than 40 years in show business and is one of the most popular and respected male vocalists of his time. He won the esteemed New York Drama Critics Award for his Broadway debut, and has garnered nine Emmys, a Grammy Award and the Film Advisory Board's Award of Excellence - a few of the many awards and honors he shares with his wife and performing partner, Eydie Gorme.

Over the years, Lawrence's television repertoire would grow to include numerous comedies from "The Lucy Show" to "Empty Nest," dramas like "Police Story" and "Murder, She Wrote," and numerous appearances on variety shows including Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show," and "The Carol Burnett Show."

Today, Lawrence is a favorite guest on such popular shows as "Politically Incorrect" and "The Rosie O'Donnell Show."

In addition to the New York Drama Critics Award, Lawrence earned a Tony Award nomination for his 1964 Broadway debut in the musical "What Makes Sammy Run." Lawrence also starred with his wife, Eydie, in the Broadway musical, "Golden Rainbow."

Lawrence's recording career is legendary. He recorded his first, self-titled album in 1953, and has since recorded 28 solo albums, including: "Swing Softly With Me," "Portraits of My Love," "Ballads of the Sad Young Men," "Winners" and "Take it On Home," among other memorable classics. Steve and Eydie won the Grammy Award for their album "We've Got Us." Additionally, "Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin" won seven Emmy Awards, in addition to the two they won for "Our Love is Here to Stay," which celebrates the music of George and Ira Gershwin, and the Award of Excellence from the Film Advisory Board for "From This Moment On," their musical salute to Cole Porter. They received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and in 1996 were honored by the Society of Singers with the coveted "Ella Award ."
