Biography

Madeleine Potter has appeared in two Merchant Ivory films prior to The Golden Bowl: Slaves of New York and she also starred in The Bostonians alongside Vanessa Redgrave, for which she was awarded the coveted Silver Peacock for Best Actress at the 1985 International Film Festival of India. Her other film work includes Bloodhounds Of Broadway directed by Howard Brookner and Two Evil Eyes directed by Dario Argento and co-starring Harvey Keitel. She also starred under the direction of Louis Malle, in Lydie Breeze, a unique off-Broadway stage production which marked the film-maker's theatrical debut.

Madeleine has enjoyed tremendous success on the stage both on and off Broadway and in London's West End. Her roles have varied from Lady Chiltern in Wilde's An Ideal Husband directed in London and on Broadway by Sir Peter Hall, to Greta in Steven Berkoff's acclaimed adaptation and direction of Kafka's novel Metamorphosis. Her association with theatre in Ireland, due in part to her Irish heritage, includes roles in The Plough And The Stars and Three Shouts From A Hill written by the legendary Sean O'Casey and directed by his daughter Shivaun, as well as Philadelphia Here I Come, Sea Marks and The Playboy Of The Western World for the Irish Repertory Theatre. Her abilities as a classical actress have been proven in such roles as Ophelia for Lindsay Anderson's Hamlet, Olivia in Twelfth Night and Lady Anne in Richard III.
