John Williams - Details

Biography

John Williams (composer) has composed the music and served as music director for more than 85 films. He has received 38 Academy Award® nominations and has been awarded five Oscars®, one British Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards and 17 Grammy Awards, as well as several gold and platinum records. His most recent Oscar® was for Best Original Score for Schindler's List (1993). In addition to several other projects, Williams will soon compose the music for Steven Spielberg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), Minority Report (2002) and Memoirs of a Geisha (2001). He will also compose the music for George Lucas' forthcoming pair of Star wars (1977) prequels.

In addition to his film music, Williams has written many concert pieces, including two symphonies, a bassoon concerto, a cello concerto premiered by Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra and concertos for flute, violin, clarinet, tuba, bassoon and trumpet.

Williams has also written music to accompany Steven Spielberg's documentary The Unfinished Journey (1999) celebrating America 's new millennium, as well as music for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty, for the Special Olympics and for the 1984, 1988 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

He has conducted music for numerous successful recordings and was conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993, as well as a guest conductor with dozens of major orchestras around the world
