Jennifer Lawrence in producer role.

Jennifer Lawrence is set to produce her first film, an adaptation of The Glass Castle.

The Hunger Games star will also take the lead role in the screen version of Jeanette Walls' 2005 best-selling memoir about her upbringing with an eccentric artist mother and an alcoholic father.

She said: "I don't know if I will be any good, but I'm trying it. So far I am not sure if I am because I am very instinctual, but not very verbal. But producing is something that I have really wanted to do."

Jennifer, 23, said she looked into adapting the memoir, which spent 335 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list, because her mum loved the book and encouraged her to read it.

She said: "My mother is like the lucky charm with these kinds of things. She read Winter's Bone and Hunger Games and when I read The Glass Castle I thought it was amazing, so we found Gil Netter, the producer who had the rights to the book."

"He and I started talking and now we are developing. We have a director and a writer and it's getting going."

The Lionsgate film will be directed by Destin Cretton. A production date for the movie has not yet been set.
