Ghost Protocol Makes Cruise Top Earner

Tom Cruise has been named Hollywood's highest paid actor, earning nearly twice that of second placed Leonardo DiCaprio.

Forbes said the 50-year-old earned \$75m (£47.8m) between May 2011 and May 2012 following the success of the Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Ghost Protocol, the fourth film in the M:I franchise, earned more than \$700m (£447m) in cinemas worldwide.

Pundits are now speculating whether his future earnings will be hit by his split from Katie Holmes, who filed for divorce and is seeking sole custody of their young daughter Suri.

Some have questioned his affiliation with the Church Of Scientology, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who likened its practices to a cult.

But Cruise has weathered negative publicity in the past.

This followed his couch-jumping incident on Oprah where he declared his love for Holmes, and his rambling thoughts on Scientology in media interviews and on YouTube.

DiCaprio, 37, who was last year's top earner, tied for second place on Forbes' list with Adam Sandler, 45, both with \$37m (£23.6m).

DiCaprio's earnings dropped after his 2010 film Inception grossed \$825m (£527m) at the global box office, while his last movie, J. Edgar, proved to be a commercial disappointment.

Former professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, 40, came in fourth, earning \$36m (£23m).
