JK Rowling unveils Pottermore site

Author JK Rowling announced the series will also be available as audiobooks through a new website, Pottermore.

Previously unpublished Harry Potter material will be released on a new website in a move described by author JK Rowling as a "give-back" to her millions of fans.

Details about some of the famous characters in the series and an in-depth explanation of Quidditch - the fictional sport played by the student wizards in the best-selling books - are promised.

The launch of Pottermore was teased last week when ten Harry Potter fansites were given coordinates for a special map, which allowed fans to find the letters to create the project's title.

Speaking at a press conference at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington, central London, Rowling said the Pottermore site was a place for fans to "share" the books.

She said: "I wanted to give something back to the fans that have followed Harry so devotedly over the years, and to bring the stories to a new digital generation."

"I hope fans and those new to Harry will have as much fun helping to shape Pottermore as I have."

"Just as I have contributed to the website, everyone else will be able to join in by submitting their own comments, drawings and other content in a safe and friendly environment."

The site, which Rowling said she had been working on for two years, promises to immerse users in the boy wizard's world, offering opportunities for computer gaming, social networking and an online store.

Sections let users shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary platform at London's King's Cross train station and be sorted into Hogwarts' school houses using the Sorting Hat.

One million users will initially be chosen to help develop the online world, before it is open to all users from October.

The Harry Potter novels have sold more than 450 million copies through Bloomsbury in Britain, and Scholastic in the United States.

However the e-books - which will be available in several languages - will be published through Rowling's Pottermore Publishing, rather than her print publishers which do not own the digital rights.

Pottermore will go live on 31 July - Harry Potter's birthday.
