He has been nominated for his role in Troy reports BBC online.

Other actors nominated include Jamie Foxx for Ray, Will Smith for Hitch, Matt Damon for The Bourne Supremacy and Leonardo for The Aviator.

Comedies Mean Girls and Anchorman have four nominations each.

Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan is nominated for best actress.

Other actresses nominated in the best actress category include Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman, Natalie Portman and Rachel McAdams.

Rachel McAdams has five nominations to her name, for Mean Girls and The Notebook.

Kill Bill: Volume 2, Spider-Man 2, Napoleon Dynamite, Ray and The Incredibles will compete for best film.

The MTV Movie Awards will once again be hosted by comedian and actor Jimmy Fallon at a ceremony in Los Angeles on 4 June.
