Foxx leads nominations


Jamie Foxx is leading the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Nominations included his performance as Ray Charles in the biopic Ray, as well as a best supporting actor nod for Collateral.

The comedy Sideways collected four nominations, including best ensemble cast and best actor for Paul Giamatti.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on 5 February reports BBC online.

In the best performance by a male actor category Foxx will also be competing against Don Cheadle for Hotel Rwanda, Johnny Depp for Finding Neverland and Leonardo DiCaprio for The Aviator.

The best female nominations have gone to Imelda Staunton for Vera Drake, Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby, Annette Bening for Being Julia, Catalina Sandino Moreno for Maria Full of Grace and Kate Winslet for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Hilary Swank has also been nominated for a further acting award, for best actress in a TV movie or mini-series in Iron Jawed Angels.

The youngest nominee is 12-year-old British actor Freddie Highmore, who has been included in the best supporting actor category for Finding Neverland. Alongside Highmore is veteran actor James Garner for The Notebook, Thomas Haden Church for Sideways and Morgan Freeman for Million Dollar Baby. Garner will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the event.

Sideways also reaped a best actress nomination for Virginia Madsen, who has already been receiving plaudits for her performance in the road trip comedy set in the wine region of California.

Desperate Housewives received nominations for best ensemble cast in a comedy, while Teri Hatcher was the only one of its stars to receive an individual nomination for lead actress in a comedy.

Also featured in the comedy ensemble selection are Sex and the City, Arrested Development, Everybody Loves Raymond and Will and Grace. Two-times winner Six Feet Under is once again nominated for best drama ensemble alongside 24, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Sopranos and The West Wing.
