Julia Roberts is in hospital in Los Angeles after experiencing early contractions.

According to E! quoting People magazine the 36-year-old actress was escorted by husband Danny Moder to the hospital after she began the contractions - about two months ahead of schedule.

Roberts is expecting a set of twins one boy, one girl in early January.

The actress and her unborn children are said to be fine, but Roberts will likely be confined to bed rest until she delivers.

Roberts had been planning on making the rounds in the coming weeks to promote her two new movies, Closer and Ocean's Twelve.
