Lord of the Rings dominates Oscar nominations


The Lord of the Rings has received 11 Oscar nominations - including Best Picture and Best Director for Peter Jackson.

British interest in the 2004 Academy Awards extends to Jude Law and Sir Ben Kingsley, who have been nominated for Best Actor and Samantha Morton who's up for the Best Actress accolade.

The Lord of the Rings was just ahead of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World which got 10 nominations, including Best Picture.

Also nominated for Best Picture is Seabiscuit, Mystic River and Lost in Translation.

Keisha Castle-Hughes has become the youngest actress to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar - for her performance in Whale Rider. She'll be up against Diane Keaton, Samantha Morton, Charlize Theron and Naomi Watts.

Jude Law has been nominated for for Cold Mountain, but his co-star Nicole Kidman hasn't been nominated for Best Actress.

Sir Ben Kingsley has been nominated for his performance in House of Sand and Fog. Also nominated for Best Actor are Sean Penn, Bill Murray and Johnny Depp.

And Steven Knight received a Best Screenplay nomination for the British film, Dirty Pretty Things, about an Nigerian immigrant discovering the unpalatable side of London life.

Annie Lennox gets a nomination for the Original Song Oscar, along with two co-writers, for Into the West from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett are nominated in the same category for Scarlet Tide from Cold Mountain, and Sting was nominated for another Cold Mountain song - You Will Be My Ain True Love.
