De Niro in cancer shock

Robert De Niro has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The cancer was discovered in the 60-year-old Taxi Driver star during a routine check-up.

His spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said the cancer was "detected at an early stage" and doctors "project a full recovery".

He refused to say what treatment New Yorker De Niro is undergoing for the illness.

De Niro has appeared in more than 60 movies during a 40-year career, including The Untouchables and more recently Analyze This (1999) and Meet The Parents (2000).

He has been nominated for six Oscars and won as best actor in 1980 for Raging Bull. Six years before that he took the best supporting award for The Godfather, Part II.
