Ken Loach Speaks Out About UK Film Industry

Ken Loach, one of the UK's most talented and respected directors has voiced his strong views on the problems within the country's film industry.

He said, "Here, you're always having to struggle to get attention because of some trashy American product." And he contrasts this to France where more priority and respect is given to home-grown talent.

Loach has recently been at Cannes for the premiere of his latest film Sweet Sixteen (2002) which won the award for best screenplay. His most acclaimed work includes Bread and Roses (2000) and My Name Is Joe (1998).

Loach added, "It's a question of what money you spend. For every pound that's spent to promote our film, many many times that will be spent to present some violent, aggressive, pro-American film, and it's a struggle. It's like a real restaurant competing with McDonald's."

Sweet Sixteen (2002) is released in the UK on the 4th October.
