Rod Steiger, the Oscar winning star that appeared in classics such as, In The Heat of the Night (1967), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Pawnbroker, The (1964) died on Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital of kidney failure and pneumonia, he was aged 77.
Steiger was married five times, most notably to actress Claire Bloom (1959-69), with whom he had a daughter. He also had a son with Paula Ellis. He suffered with depression for a number of years and later helped close friend Elizabeth Taylor out of a severe depression.
His last film performance was in the 2001 movie Month of Sundays, A (2001) in which he played Charley McCabe.
