KIRK DOUGLAS' wife Anne was shocked when she first read her husband's new book A Stroke Of Luck - because it was the first time she found out about his suicide attempt. Douglas, 85, was too ashamed to tell his wife of 48 years of his weakest moment as he tried to come to terms with depression following his stroke in 1998 - and so let her read about it instead.
He says, "I learned that suicide is dumb and selfish. You're just thinking of yourself. I'm not proud of it. I think that was a weak moment. When the gun barrel struck my tooth it hurt. I took the gun out and started to laugh. A toothache prevented me from killing myself. It's ridiculous. "
