Black Hawk Down Premiere Attracts Political Figures

New war movie BLACK HAWK DOWN (2002) attracted many political figures, including America's Defense Secretary, for its Washington DC premiere this week (15th January 2002). Donald H. Rumsfeld joined Iran-Contra figure Oliver North and Tipper Gore, wife of former vice-President Al Gore, as well as dozens of men and women in uniform for the showing of RIDLEY SCOTT's film, about America's invasion of Somalia in 1993.

Based on a book by MARK BOWDEN, who also attended the premiere with GLADIATOR (2000) director Scott, the story chronicles a three-day mission in Mogadishu, which resulted in the downing of two Black Hawk helicopters and the deaths of 18 American soldiers. However the crowds behind the rope saved their squeals for two of the film's stars, JOSH HARTNETT and WILLIAM FICHTNER.
