Mariah's Movie Flop - Out Of Top Ten

MARIAH CAREY's debut movie barely dented the American box office charts in its opening weekend (22-23SEP01). GLITTER (2001), the only new movie opening in wide release, made a paltry $2. 5 million (£1. 9 million) and failed to register in the top 10. BRUCE SNYDER, president of domestic distribution for 20TH CENTURY FOX, says,

"It's disappointing. With the climate in this country, I don't think I know quite what's going on. " It was the worst weekend for studios since 15 September 2000. PAUL DERGARABEDIAN, president of EXHIBITOR RELATIONS, says jitters from the recent terrorist attacks (11SEP01), a lack of new movies and the Friday night (22SEP01) celebrity telethon kept movie audiences away.

Nearly 60 million Americans watched the telethon benefitting victims of the attacks. "There were more stars in that than in any film in the marketplace," Dergarabedian says. (NFA/WNWCJS)
