PLANET OF THE APES (2001) more than lived up to its pre-release expectations at the American box office this weekend (27- 29JUL01), raking in an estimated $69. 6 million (£53. 5 million).
The TIM BURTON-helmed movie, which stars Mark Wahlberg and HELENA BONHAM CARTER, has now made history as the biggest non-holiday three-day weekend opener ever.
The debut of the ape-filled flick has topped that of UNIVERSAL's MUMMY RETURNS, the (2001), which opened to $68. 1 million (£52. 3 million) in early May (01).
The opening for Planet of the Apes (2001) marks a company best for 20TH CENTURY FOX, topping the debut weekend of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) which grossed $64. 8 million (£49. 8 million), and is a personal best for Burton and Wahlberg. (RGS/HR/KMW)
