MADONNA's fairytale marriage to British movie director GUY RITCHIE has turned into a nightmare - and friends fear it will end before their first anniversary.

The two have been spotted arguing bitterly in public and were even photographed during a fight on a London street that left the MATERIAL GIRL in tears and her husband storming off ahead of her in a huff.

A source close to the couple says, "This marriage is on the rocks. I think Guy's gotten more than he bargained for. It wouldn't surprise me to see them split up very soon. "

And another source adds, "It's their first public spat, but they're a volatile twosome and the sparks really fly in private. Their friends are all worried that their relationship is on the skids. "

Friends say the seven-month union is being torn apart by the pressures of Madonna's DROWNED WORLD TOUR and Guy's refusal to be treated like a boy toy. A pal says,

"Other men in her life have been boy toys, people to gratify her sexual needs or wait on her 24 hours a day. But Guy's not standing for any of that. He's a stubborn, macho guy who doesn't take any guff from women - and he has a hot career of his own. "
