Burton Avoids The Oscars

Cult director TIM BURTON is worried his PLANET OF THE APES (2001) remake might earn him an OSCAR - because he would never attend the ceremony.

The EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990) movie maker hates Hollywood's big night and avoids it at all costs.

He even boycotted the ACADEMY AWARDS when actor MARTIN LANDAU won a Best Supporting Actor prize for Burton's film ED WOOD (1994).

The director says, "I can't be around that stuff. This year (01) I was in Hawaii, and although we finished shooting the day before the awards, I stayed there an extra day to miss them. The whole thing feels like a high school popularity contest. " (KL/PL/KW
