The long awaited sequel to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, HANNIBAL, left the competition far behind during its opening weekend (10/11FEB01).
American audiences flocked to see SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS reprise his role as cannibal DR HANNIBAL LECTER in the gruesome movie.
The, film directed by RIDLEY SCOTT, which also stars BOOGIE NIGHTS actress JULIANNE MOORE, took over $58 million (£38 million) in ticket sales.
The film had the third highest American opening ever, behind STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE ($64.8 million/£43.2 million) and THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK ($72 million/£48 million). (ES/WNTRE/CPT)
