Maelstrom Dominates Canada's Genie Awards


The Montreal-produced film Maelstrom nearly swept the major categories at the Canadian Genie Awards ceremony Monday night as it won five major prizes, including Best Film. It also won for Achievement in Direction (Denis Villeneuve), Best Actress (Marie-Josée Croze), Best Screenplay (Villeneuve) and Achievement in Cinematography (Andre Turpin). The film is regarded as a top contender for an Oscar in the best foreign film category. Other top winners: Best Actor: Tony Nardi, My Father's Angel; Best Supporting Actor: Martin Cummins, Love Come Down; Best Supporting Actress: Helen Shaver, We All Fall Down; Achievement in Editing: Susan Shipton, Possible Worlds, Best Documentary: Ron Mann, Grass.
