Will Smith Amazing In Straight Role, Says Redford

Acting legend ROBERT REDFORD believes fans will be "amazed and thrilled" by the darker side of WILL SMITH. The rap pop star became a $15 million (œ10 million)-a-movie man followng MEN IN BLACK. But the movie clown is playing it straight in Redford's new period drama THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE. Smith plays a guardian angel golfing caddy who restores the confidence of the hero, RANNULPH JUNUH, played by MATT DAMON. Damon is a golfing genius whose life is destroyed by the horrors of what he sees in the trenches during the First World War. On his return to America he finds he has lost his golf swing and his girl ADELE, played by CHARLIZE THERON. Redford won an Oscar the first time he directed a movie, ORDINARY PEOPLE. He says, "It was good to see Will playing a more subdued character. He is brilliantly talented and I knew he would pull off whatever I asked him to do. I think I had as much faith in him as he had in me, so we clicked. "People will be amazed and thrilled by him." (RGS/WNWCAN/NFA)
