A segment of the closing Olympic Games ceremonies based on the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and featuring female impersonators is likely to touch off an international controversy, the South China Morning News indicated today (Thursday).
The "tribute to drag," part of a celebration of Australian culture was denounced Wednesday by a member of the Australian Council of Churches who said, "Some deeply religious countries could be extremely upset by this depiction of homosexuality and gender-crossing." A spokesman for the Catholic Church also criticized the plans. Olympic organizers declined comment.
