Danny Boyle has revealed that he will be returning to the "28 Days Later" one more time as he intends to direct the third of the new trilogy of films.

The third film, still untitled, comes after "28 Days Later" and Nia DaCosta's "28 Days Later: The Bone Temple", which hits theaters on January 16, 2026. Alex Garland returns to pen the film, as does producer Andrew Macdonald.

Alex Garland pens the scripts for all three new films and says: “This is very narratively ambitious. Danny and I understood that. We tried to condense it, but its natural form felt like a trilogy.”

Additionally it has also been confirmed that Cillian Murphy does NOT appear in the first film, even in a cameo, but could well return in the second and/or third films. Producer Andrew MacDonald says:

"We wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy."

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and more star in "28 Years Later" which opens this Summer.
