Anne Hathaway to Return in 'Princess Diaries 3' with New Director at the Helm.

Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her starring role as the charming ruler of Genovia in 'Princess Diaries 3'. Adele Lim will direct the upcoming sequel, taking over from the late Garry Marshall who directed the first two installments.

Lim is the first woman to direct a Princess Diaries movie. She is known for writing Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, and making her directorial debut with Joy Ride.

"As a diehard fan of the original 'Princess Diaries', I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim said in a statement. "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide."

While plot details are still under wraps, fans have wondered where the story may lead. The second film ended with Mia ascending the Genovian throne after her grandmother stepped down. The upcoming sequel could potentially draw from events in Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries book series, which extended beyond the movies.

Speculation is also growing around whether other beloved cast members might return. Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse, has expressed uncertainty about involvement due to her recent retirement. However, with Clarisse’s pivotal role, fans remain hopeful.

The Princess Diaries franchise debuted in 2001 and launched Hathaway’s career with its coming-of-age story of an ordinary teen discovering her royal lineage. The 2004 sequel followed Mia’s preparation for her new role as queen.
