Moviegoers looking for an alternative to commercial, family-oriented films found it in Fox Searchlight's Quills.
The movie, in which the Marquis de Sade is the leading character (portrayed by Geoffrey Rush), earned and estimated $314,000 in only nine theaters (located in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, and Boston) -- a sensational $35,000 per theater.
Thirteen more cities are due to be added on Dec. 15 before a wide release on Christmas Day. The critically praised drama You Can Count on Me also did well in art houses, taking in $638,000 as it expanded into 53 theaters -- an average of $12,000 per theater.
