CBS News Chief Replies To Criticism Of Vote Call

Responding to a letter from Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-LA), chairman of the House Telecommunications Subcommittee, CBS News chief Andrew Heyward said Tuesday that his network made miscalls in Florida because of erroneous information that it had received from Voter News Service, which conducts exit polling for the major news organizations, and because of a computer error by a Florida county elections office.

As reported in today's (Wednesday) Wall Street Journal, Heyward remarked, "We were as good as the information we were getting from sources we trusted. In this case, that information was not good, and neither were we." Tauzin has said that he will call network news execs to testify before his committee as early as next month to explain why they declared Mr. Gore the winner in Florida before all the polls closed.
