Glen Powell, has officially been tapped to play the lead in Paramount's reboot of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger cult-classic, The Running Man.
Based on the novel by Stephen King , The Running Man will be directed by Edgar Wright, who has been attached to the project since 2021. Wright co-wrote the script with Michael Bacall, and will also serve as producer alongside partners Nira Parkl and Simon Kinberg.
Additional details on the reboot are still shrouded in mystery, and it's not yet clear who else may be starring in the film, or when it will see its release.
"In the year 2019, America is a totalitarian state where the favorite television program is The Running Man — a game show in which prisoners must run to freedom to avoid a brutal death," the synopsis for the 1987 movie reads. "Having been made a scapegoat by the government, an imprisoned Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has the opportunity to make it back to the outside again by being a contestant on the deadly show, although the twisted host, Damon Killian (Richard Dawson), has no intention of letting him escape."
Powell had a major public breakout turn with his Hangman role in "Top Gun: Maverick" and will be seen this year in both Richard Linklater’s acclaimed action-comedy “Hitman” on Netflix in June, and Universal’s “Twisters” film in July.
