Tonight's episode of E.R., featuring Sally Fields, will be the first series episode ever to air in the widescreen "letterbox" format, an experiment to allow the entire frame to be shown on HDTV television sets without being cut off on the sides. Conventional television sets will display black bars at the bottom and top of the picture.
