Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell joins Twister sequel.

'Top Gun: Maverick' star Glen Powell is in talks to star opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s 'Twisters', a sequel to 1996's 'Twister'.

Lee Isaac Chung is directing the film from a script by "The Revenant" writer Mark L. Smith. "Twisters" is set to release on July 19, 2024.

Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, Twister was a massive hit in 1996, scoring more than $494 million at the worldwide box office, thanks in no small part to the film’s groundbreaking special effects. The original film was helmed by Speed director Jan De Bont and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by author Michael Crichton.

The new story is not a sequel, nor is it expected to bring back old characters. The studio is describing it as a “new chapter” in the story. Edgar-Jones will star in the project as a former storm chaser who, after surviving a disastrous tornado encounter, now works a desk job. However, she will soon be forced to go out into the breach once more.

Given the immense success of Top Gun: Maverick, Powell has been in the spotlight lately. He was also recently seen co-starring with Jonathan Majors in last year's Devotion, and he's currently working on the Richard Linklater film Hitman alongside Euphoria favorite Sydney Sweeney. Powell is also set ot star with Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins in the upcoming action thriller Locked.
