French-language Dispute Closes Down IMAX Theater In Montreal

Toronto-based Imax is in a legal dispute with a Montreal exhibitor that last week shut down the Imax theater in Brossard, Quebec, on Montreal's South Shore, laying off 40 people, the Canadian Financial Post reported Sunday. Lucien Richard, manager of TheMax theater, claims that the giant-screen corporation has failed to offer a French-language version of its movie Cyberworld 3D. A spokeswoman for Imax denied that the company had any obligation to provide a French version. Richard, citing an order by a Quebec judge in September, told the newspaper that he will continue the legal battle to force Imax to provide a French version of the film and to tailor other films to the city's French-speaking audience.
