Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp in Talks to Star in Robert Eggers' 'Nosferatu'.

Robert Eggers' long-awaited new take on the Nosferatu is gaining some serious momentum as sources say that Bill Skarsgard is attached to play the titular character and Lily-Rose Depp is in talks to co-star.

Eggers is set to write, direct and produce the new imagining of the cinematic classic, which follows the gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Eggers is fresh off the release of "The Northman", his retelling of the Amleth legend, the source material for Shakespeare's "Hamlet". Critics loved Eggers' Viking saga, but it polarized audiences. As a result, the film made less than $70 million at the global box office.

In 2017 Eggers was planning his own "Nosferatu" movie - following the 1922 silent film and the Werner Herzog-directed 1979 remake - starring Anya Taylor-Joy, who collaborated with the filmmaker on their breakthrough indie "The Witch" and, earlier this year, starred in his Viking epic "The Northman". After COVID-19 delayed production on "The Northman", plans for "Nosferatu" also shifted, which has led a myriad of scheduling conflicts, including Harry Styles' exit from the project in March after he was briefly attached to star opposite Taylor-Joy.

Nosferatu currently does not have a production or release date confirmed. The original 1922 film was last remade in 1979 by Werner Herzog entitled "Nosferatu the Vampyre".
