Despite news of a reconciliation, MEG RYAN and DENNIS QUAID's attempts to patch up their troubled marriage have failed.

Just days after the couple were said to be working to save their nine-year marriage - which ran into trouble after Meg began an affair with actor RUSSELL CROWE - the 38-year-old SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE actress has counter-filed for divorce.

Quaid originally filed for divorce in July (00) after he learned
of her fling with the hunky New Zealander while they were in London filming PROOF OF LIFE.

News of the divorce comes as no surprise to Ryan's dad HARRY
HYRA, who says he "found out the truth" when he called the
Hollywood actress demanding to know if the couple had put their
differences aside.

Hyra says, "I read about it in the paper. I thought, because it
said they were back together, that it must be true. I was really
happy and excited for them and of course for my grandson, JAKE.

"But Meg said it wasn't true. She told me there would not be a
reconciliation and that she had spent sometime in Los Angeles with Dennis for Jake's sake. So I was happy and sad all in the space of a really short time. She said the divorce was still going ahead."
