MICHAEL DOUGLAS is determined to lose weight - so he looks as good for his wedding as bride-to-be CATHERINE ZETA-JONES. The 56-year-old BASIC INSTINCT star will wed Catherine, 31, next month (18NOV00).

The actress has been trying desperately to get her famous figure back after the birth of baby DYLAN, and her fiance is determined to do just as well.

Michael has been piling on the pounds (kilos) to play superslob GRADY TRIPP in WONDER BOYS, binging on beer and burgers - but hopes to get his old look back before the lavish New York wedding. He says, "I've still got about seven or eight pounds (3.1-3.6 kilos) to go. It's certainly a little slower coming off than it was going on!"

And the actor admits he was amazed sexy Zeta ever fancied him - because they met when he was at his heaviest. He says, "It was the first thing I told her - I'm just preparing for a movie. We met in September 1998 and I started shooting in January 1999, so I was well on my way with my pizza and cheeseburgers and beers."
