Julianne Moore to Join 'Dear Evan Hansen' Movie.

Oscar winner Julianne Moore is set to join the ensemble cast of Universal’s movie adaptation of the Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen, joining Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams and Amandla Stenberg.

"Dear Evan Hansen", a Tony-winning musical, opened on Broadway in 2016. The story follows a high schooler with social anxiety who gets caught up in a lie after a classmate’s family mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note.

Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical, penned the script, and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the music and original lyrics for the musical and film. Stephen Chbosky will direct, and Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce for their Universal-based Marc Platt Productions.

Ben Platt, who originated the role and even won a Tony for it, is reprising the character of Evan Hansen, a socially awkward teen who gets caught up in a lie when he says he was best friends with a schoolmate who commits suicide. The act initially brings him closer to a crush and brings him attention but he must face repercussions when the truth surfaces.

Moore will play Platt's mother, Heidi Hansen. In the stage version, the character kicks off the musical with a duet with the dead teen’s mother with the song Anybody Have a Map? Adams is playing the other mom.
