Front Runner, The

The Front Runner is Billy Sive. He is 22, and eats, sleeps, breathes and dreams running. His dreams are of Olympic scope: a gold medal in the 10,000 meter run. He was raised by loving parents who instilled in him courage, compassion, honesty, loyalty and toughness. When Billy reached college, these qualities compelled Billy to stand up for his teammates, Vince Matti and Jacques LaFont, also Olympic caliber runners, when their coach at Oregon State dropped Matti and LaFont from the team for expressing their affection for each other. Sive threw down the gauntlet, asserting that if his colleagues were thrown off the team, he’d walk with them. He also was gay. The consequence of this act of loyalty was the loss of a school and team with which to run.
