L'Humanite (2000) - Synopsis

L'Humanite (2000)

Pharaoh De Winter (EMMANUEL SCHOTTe), in his early thirties, is a plain-clothes police detective who lives with his mother in Bailluel, a small town in northeast France. He is attracted to his neighbour, a young factory worker (SeVERINE CANEELE). Pharaon is a close witness of Domino's violent and passionate relationship with her boyfriend Joseph (PHILIPPE TULLIER). Pharaon is a voyeur, rather than a participator in life.

A suffocating environment, Bailleul is a close-knit community where no event passes unnoticed and everyone knows the business of their neighbours. Despite this, an eleven year-old girl has been raped and murdered. A withdrawn and shy character, Pharaon's equilibrium is destroyed, as the film opens, with his discovery of the child's mutilated body. Pharaon is astonished and appalled, not only by the crime but also by the monstrousness of human behaviour, as he attempts to hunt the killer.
