A Grand Master of chess by the name of Alexander Luzhin (John Turturro) journeys to a North Italian lakeside resort to play the match of his career. In an attempt to find true love in Natalia (Emily Watson), Luzhin must confront his disturbing past and conquer the resulting battles - both on and off the chessboard.
