The opening wedding scene in the new Bill Duke film, "Not Easily Broken" is so overwrought and cliched, it's akin to sitting down with a promising novel, cracking open the cover and reading on the first page, "It was a dark and stormy night ..."
But 10 minutes into the movie, adapted from the popular T.D. Jakes novel, the story begins to unwind into an intriguing study of a troubled marriage in contemporary Los Angeles, race and the promise of reconciliation.
