In America : Cast Interview

Director, Jim Sheridan’s semi-autobiographical film, IN AMERICA, moved the audience from stunned silence, to tears and finally rapturous applause at its European premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in the presence of Jim Sheridan and lead actors Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine.

Samantha Morton described her experience of working on the film at a press conference yesterday by saying, ‘of all the things I have ever done, this was by far the most personal.’ Afterwards, members of the audience were overheard repeatedly praising the powerful performances of the actors with special credit for the children played by newcomers, Sarah and Emma Bolger.

IN AMERICA is intimately told through the eyes of Christy, the eldest of two young daughters (Sarah Bolger) and is a coming of age story about her parents, an Irish couple (Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine) who are setting up a new life in America.

The film was co-written by Sheridan and his two daughters, Kirsten and Naomi. The film is dedicated to Frankie Sheridan, Jim Sheridan’s brother who died tragically at the age
of ten.

IN AMERICA first screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and continues to receive praise across the UK press:

‘This is a beautiful enriching film that speaks more eloquently about grief and hope and love than you would think possible. The performances of Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine are strong and united. Sarah and Emma Bolger, as the sisters, are remarkable…Sheridan has never made anything as personal as this. He shows the courage to be truthful.’

Angus Wolfe Murray, Edinburgh Evening News

In America is heart-warming and beautifully acted. Just the most pleasant surprise of the year’.
Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail

‘An eerily amazing emotional journey.’
Fiachra Gibbons, The Guardian

‘A film full of colour and optimism with powerful acting from Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine. But good as they are the film is stolen by Sarah and Emma Bolger who give performances of heart-breaking innocence’.
Alistair McKay, The Scotsman

‘The finest work yet from the Irish master’.
John Millar, Scottish Sunday Mail

Jim Sheridan’s films have achieved popular and critical acclaim throughout the world and have garnered two Academy Awards for their actors, as well as 13 Academy Award nominations and numerous prestigious international awards.
