On_Line : Director’s Statement

My intention with this film was to explore the growing community of people who conduct most of their social and sexual lives at their computers, rarely venturing outside their homes. The inspiration for this story came from my experiences running an interactive media company during the infancy of the World Wide Web, and from getting to know a group of people who broadcast their private lives for all the world to see.

ON_LINE immerses the audience in a world that many people have not fully experienced. Visually, I wanted to induce the unique mindscape of multi-tasking and hypertext connections made possible by the Internet. I felt that breaking apart the film screen into multiple frames, in the same way we divide our computer screens into multiple windows, would help evoke this sensation.

I was also interested in the phenomenon of sex over computers. We are living in a world in which people are able to find and connect with others across the globe - or across the street - instantaneously. When these cyber-relationships lead to sex play, is the outcome satisfying for the participants, or does cybersex only serve to further manifest feelings of isolation?

ON_LINE captures a world in which culture intersects with technology and fuses into a new paradigm for personal relationships.
